Your age, marital status, driving, and criminal history can affect your auto premiums.
If you’re married, living in California, and looking to buy a new car, we’ve broken down the state’s most popular models for you to consider.
Included are quotes to give you an idea of the premiums you may pay.
I | Glossary of Terms
Before we get into the different quotes, let’s review some key terms you’ll see throughout this post.
1 | Liability: Most states require this coverage. It covers you if you’re responsible for an accident leading to the death or injury of a third party. Your liability insurance funds your legal defense, compensations payable in a lawsuit, lost wages, or medical expenses incurred by the injured third party.
Liability does not cover you or anyone else in your car at the time of the accident.
2 | Property Damage: Most states require this coverage. Suppose you’re responsible for an accident leading to a third party’s vehicle or property damage. In that case, it pays for their repairs or replacement.
In the best-case scenario, your property damage coverage will be enough to compensate for all the third party’s losses, and they won’t end up suing you.
3 | Uninsured motorist: This type of coverage is available for property and bodily injury. It protects you and your passengers in the event you meet in an accident caused by an uninsured driver or someone with inadequate auto insurance. Quotes for UM usually match your liability coverage limits.
4 | Deductibles: Your deductible is the money you pay out of your pocket before your insurer’s portion of your claim kicks in. You set this limit during the application process. Having a high deductible means a low premium. In contrast, a low deductible translates into a higher premium.
Deductibles come in two versions:
- Collision coverage is required if you’re leasing or financing your vehicle. This coverage pays for repairs or replaces your car if an accident caused the damage. The accident could be with another vehicle or an object like a tree, fence, or house.
- Comprehensive coverage is required if you’re leasing or financing your vehicle. Otherwise, it’s optional. This coverage pays for repairing or replacing your car if it’s damaged by an act of nature (flooding, fire, wind), theft, vandalism, or collision with an animal.
5 | 100/300 or 250/500: These numbers are shorthand for saying you have $100,000 in coverage for bodily injury liability per person and $300,000 in coverage for bodily injury liability per accident.
Likewise, 250/500 means you have $250,000 in coverage for bodily injury liability per person and $500,000 for bodily injury liability per accident.
Let’s say you meet in an accident where three people suffer injuries. Your 100/300 liability policy covers each injured party for no more than $100,000 each, totaling $300,000, the full limit of your policy. But if you were to meet in an accident involving more than three injured parties, like four or five, you’re in for a pinch.
Your 100/300 policy will only cover three of the third parties involved, with your insurer paying out no more than $100,000 per person for a total of $300,000 for that single accident. The monies falling over your limit will be your responsibility.
